When a Sibling Breaks the School Rule

black-and-white-black-and-white-boy-551590It is said that rules are made by man and for man so their could be orderliness and fairness. There is no doubt that every existing rules that existed or that will exist in the future has been or will be broken. Expectations are that those who break rules be ready for consequences they birth. For this, I never fail to remind my students to be weary of what they involve themselves in. Good or bad. I call it reward. It is a duty I take seriously as a teacher, to also impact good character into them in addition to their primary goal, academic.

Good character and academic strength will help them become better citizens and contribute to the society. I have attended some university graduations, including, my convocation ceremonies at University of Nigeria and University of Ibadan. Part or the words you would hear are ‘…found worthy in character and learning…’. It thus means that it isn’t only one’s academic quality that matter. Character is part and parcel of it.

But what happens when a parent instead put all blames for punishment melted on a bullying son on the bullied son? That was the case of one of my students. I couldn’t think of any reason for such behaviour other than a show of favouritism. Albeit in public. Many people have committed suicide due to bullying from different persons (family members and school mates included). When parents learn that indulging their bully children is an ill that will come back to hurt them and the society at large, that would be the beginning of peaceful and healthy society.
